UPA, a middle school located at the southern end of “The Dubs”, is an original Oakland Unified School District “new small school”. Created in response to chronic overcrowding and low academic outcomes at the old Calvin Simmons Middle School, UPA was founded to provide personalized learning through project-based learning and social-emotional development. UPA sought EBAYC to provide after-school learning programming. Today, EBAYC’s after-school learning program includes a teaching apprenticeship program for high school students, and a two-week outdoor education summer program.
