Partnering with Oakland Public Schools to Help Improve Learning Experiences & Outcomes

► ABOUT

EBAYC provides on-campus integrated support services to youth and their families in partnership with neighborhood-serving public schools.

Schools are the largest public institutions responsible for educating, socializing, and otherwise caring for young people through their childhood and adolescent years. EBAYC believes that schools are by design not able to effectively serve every young person, particularly those impacted by poverty, violence, exploitation, and forced migration. EBAYC partners with schools to help improve learning experiences and outcomes for all students.

EXPANDED LEARNING

EBAYC provides after-school learning programs at eight schools. Operating everyday throughout the school year, these programs provide academic support, visual arts, performing arts, music, sports, gardening, cooking, community-building activities, and family learning nights. EBAYC provides summer programs featuring project-based learning, outdoor education, and community service. EBAYC provides paid after-school and summer internships to high school students. Interns work as peer-to-peer mentors and teaching apprentices. Interns earn $16.50 an hour during the school year and $18 an hour during the summer.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

EBAYC anchors a tiered intervention strategy to increase students’ daily attendance in school and reduce chronic absenteeism at three schools. EBAYC provides direct outreach to all parents to communicate the educational and social value of daily attendance; organizes classroom and grade-level attendance recognitions; conducts daily “check-ins/check-outs” with students at-risk of chronic absenteeism; provides wraparound support to chronically absent students and their families; and analyzes attendance data on an ongoing basis.

LIFE COACHING

EBAYC provides Life Coaching and wraparound support to students at five schools who are experiencing multiple challenges, including community violence, social isolation, anger control, depression, anxiety, and caregiver loss. EBAYC provides life coaching conversations, activity groups, and family engagement.

FAMILY RESOURCES

EBAYC organizes and distributes food, clothing, diapers, and hygiene supplies to families in need at four schools. Periodically, EBAYC provides emergency relief funds, gift cards, and public transit passes. Distribution is organized on campus and coordinated with school administration.

YOUTH & PARENT LEADERSHIP

EBAYC recruits youth and parents, and facilitates their participation in school leadership. EBAYC organizes youth and parents to be active in various school leadership bodies; trains youth and parents in participatory action research, and facilitates their leadership growth and collective power to improve learning conditions at their school.
